The Importance of Aeration
~ March 5, 2009
Several years of experience dealing with the Eco-Pond system has taught me many things. The importance of aeration in your pond is an eccentric part of the eco balance in your pond. This is true for many reasons, but the most important one is the release of gasses.
Aeration mixes the pond water so that the toxic gases are released and wonderful life-giving oxygen replaces the toxic gases. An aerated pond will be clearer, cleaner, and have less sludge on the bottom of your pond. A pond left standing without movement is a stratified pond body plus summer heat in Florida is a mix for trouble.
The majority of cleaning organisms (aerobic bacteria and phytoplankton) in a pond use oxygen to drive their metabolic processes. Oxygen enters the water body by movement of the surface. If the surface body is not moving then the oxygen in the bottom of your pond is not mixed with the top water. This causes bad / toxic gases to build up in your pond. The ponds overall health will suffer. Of course your pond will develop major problems algae growth, rampant weed growth, and fish will die.
In short please put an areator in your pond body. If your pond is 500 gals or smaller = 1 air stone; 500 to 2000 gals = 4 air stones; if larger than 2000 gals use a larger aeration equipment. You can find these products on line or you can call me and I will set you up.
Remember: It is better to have *Clean and clear water *Reduced sediment * Stronger and more productive fish population *More oxygenated water.
Good Luck with your Eco-Pond and it’s care.

Did you know?
Hot lights in the pond body will cause the excess growth of string algae. No more than 20 watts for each light in the pond body is necessary. (Add more lights.)
Using an aerator in your eco system is beneficial to fish as well as plants.
If the pump stops working then you have a nice backup, or if your falls is not putting enough oxygen into the pond for your fish then the aerator will. (Use an outdoor only if there's is no protection). Call us if you need one.
The size of system to size of pump will help you take care of the eco balance. (Filtration will create least maintenance for your system).
Location of Bio Box to Skimmer is most important.

MY PUMP QUIT WORKING! NOW WHAT?
Each pond, fall, or both are built to be extremely reliable, however, sooner or later all of them will quit working for different reasons. Old age, voltage spikes, lighting hits, or just because. Most of the time the problem is something you can fix yourself. So, before you call us to replace a warranted or to install a new pump be sure you check the following:
*Check the circuit breaker and GFCI outlet to make sure neither of them have tripped.
*Test the electrical source by plugging the pump into a different outlet. If necessary, you can take the pump out of pond to do this. Just make sure you don’t run the pump dry for
no more than a few seconds.
*With pump unplugged, remove the screen, if necessary, and inspect and clean the pump’s impeller.
*Clean the skimmer filter mats to be sure they are
not clogged, causing the flow of water to be interrupted.
(you don’t want to clean too often)
